Fakhri El Ghezal

1981 · Akouda, Tunisia · Tunis · Visual artist & filmmaker

Fakhri El Ghezal, born in Akouda in 1981, is an independent Tunisian visual artist and filmmaker. He holds a Maîtrise in Fine Arts from the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts de Tunis (2004) and a Master's in Arts and Communication from the Institut des Beaux-Arts de Nabeul (2008). His practice includes analog photography, video, painting, drawing, calligraphy, and hybrid forms that combine these techniques. Between 2008 and 2021, he painted and worked with pyrography under the pseudonym Ibrahim Màtouss; from 2016, he also practices calligraphy and graffiti as Weld Hlima. In his work, the focus is always on light—how it manifests, appears, and reveals itself. His art is a dialogue with memory, exploring buried traces and forgotten stories that emerge through light and shadows. He received the Fondation Rambourg Award for Visual and Plastic Arts in 2018. His film Ahlou Al Kahef received the Rosa Luxemburg Prize, Best Short at Gabès Cinema Fen (2020), and a Special Jury Mention at FIDADOC Agadir (2020); it was also selected at Locarno, Carthage (JCC), and Clermont-Ferrand.
